Accessibility

I want everyone to be able to read this site, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page says what has been done, what still needs work, and how to reach me if something gets in your way.

Standard

The target is WCAG 2.2 at level AA. The site is a small custom WordPress theme, so most of the work is in the templates rather than in plugins.

What is in place

  • A “Skip to content” link at the top of every page, and a single main landmark on every page.
  • Semantic headings in order, one h1 per page, lists marked up as lists.
  • Text contrast checked against the cream background. The italic red emphasis was darkened on 9 September 2026 to clear 3:1 for large text; body text clears 4.5:1.
  • Every content image has alt text. Decorative spirograph drawings are pure CSS with no text.
  • Keyboard focus is visible, links are underlined or otherwise distinguishable, and touch targets are at least 24 by 24 pixels.
  • Animations respect the reduce motion setting in your operating system.
  • Text scales with browser zoom up to 200% without horizontal scrolling.
  • The page language is declared, and video embeds carry a title.

Known limitations

  • Some case-study images are typographic boards: pictures of text, such as a label written five ways or an award list. Each carries a caption that summarises it, and I will send the full text as plain text on request.
  • The two CVs and the research portfolio are PDFs. They are readable but not yet tagged for screen readers. Ask and I will send an accessible version.
  • Embedded YouTube players and third-party links, such as Amazon, follow those sites’ own accessibility.
  • Older blog posts in the Ideas archive, written between 2012 and 2019, have not all been re-checked for image descriptions.

How it was checked

Automated checks with Lighthouse and axe-core on 9 September 2026 across the home page, the work index, case studies and a blog post, plus manual keyboard and zoom checks in Chrome and Safari. Automated tools catch only part of what matters, so if you find something they missed, tell me.

Use the contact form on the home page, or email seema@brilliantideastudio.com. Say which page and what happened. I aim to reply within five working days and to fix real barriers, not just log them.
